Black Is the Colour of My Soul is a conceptual book that dives into how the rise of My Chemical Romance didn’t just create a music movement — it created a cultural chain reaction. From the emo wave taking over bedrooms worldwide to the internet spiraling into a new era of chaos, the project celebrates the strange, dramatic, beautifully unhinged impact of a band on an entire generation.

Brief
Created as a group project, the book brings together multiple perspectives, research styles, and visual voices. Each member contributed to building a layered, multi-dimensional narrative that moves through different shifts in culture. From eyeliner revolutions to Tumblr-fueled digital madness. The final outcome feels like a stitched-together emotional map of an era.
My Contribution
I began as the illustrator, crafting artworks that carried the book’s emotional tone. But somewhere between the sketches and the midnight playlists, I fell in love with layout design. I ended up shaping few of the layout and visual flow. Arranging pages, building transitions, refining typography, and helping the book find its rhythm. My illustrations and layouts work together to deepen the narrative and push the mood.
Challenges & Experience
This project pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best way. Balancing heavy research with expressive visuals, experimenting with new layout styles, and maintaining a consistent tone taught me how to merge storytelling with design. The biggest challenge was keeping the book cohesive while letting the visuals stay loud and emotional. But honestly? It made me fall harder for editorial design. I learnt how visuals and words come together do an amazing work in storytelling.
